A Case of Neurofibroma of the tongue tip

Abstract

|
Neurofibromas are slow-growing benign tumors arising from the neurilemmal sheath (Schwann cells) and fibroblasts of the peripheral nerve.
This tumor may occur as a solitary lesion or as a part of the syndrome of neurofibromatosis.
The neurofibroma of oral tissues is rare in otolaryngologic field and usually presents as a firm, elevated, non painful lesion that shows the usual histologic findings of a neurofibroma or neurilemmoma.
We have recently experienced a neurofibroma of the tongue tip. The patient was a 51 year-old female who had noticed swelling of the tongue tip with a foreign body sensation for 10 years.
The tumor was removed completely under local anesthesia,and was verified histopathologicalIy as a neurofibroma of the tongue tip.
No evidence of recurrence has been observed up to date.
